    2. Integrated photoacoustic microscopy, optical coherence tomography, and fluorescence microscopy for multimodal chorioretinal imaging

Integrated photoacoustic microscopy, optical coherence tomography, and fluorescence microscopy for multimodal chorioretinal imaging
Current clinical available retinal imaging techniques have limitations, including limited depth of penetration or requirement for the invasive injection of exogenous contrast agents. Here, we developed a novel multimodal imaging system for high-speed, high-resolution retinal imaging of larger animals, such as rabbits. The system integrates three state-of-the-art imaging modalities, including photoacoustic microscopy (PAM), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and fluorescence microscopy (FM). In vivo experimental results of rabbit eyes show that ...

    3. Dependent and multiple scattering in transmission and backscattering optical coherence tomography

Dependent and multiple scattering in transmission and backscattering optical coherence tomography
We use transmission and backscattering optical coherence tomography (OCT) to distinguish and quantify dependent and multiple scattering effects in turbid media. With transmission OCT the dependent scattering coefficients for a range of monodisperse silica particle suspensions are determined. An excellent agreement is observed between the measured dependent scattering coefficients and calculations based on Mie calculations, the Percus-Yevick radial distribution function, and coherent light scattering theory. Backscattering OCT measurements are fitted ...

    4. Integrated-optics-based optical coherence tomography (Thesis)

      Integrated-optics-based optical coherence tomography (Thesis)
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high resolution, imaging technique that has developed over the last 20 years from a complicated laboratory setup into a ready-to-use commercially available device. Instead of using electronic time gating as being used by ultrasound (US) imaging, in OCT, the optical analogue of US imaging, determines the time of flight using low coherence interferometry. To date, OCT has many clinical applications and is widely used ...

Feature Of The Week 1/27/13: An Exciting and Promising Area for OCT System Research and Commercial Opportunities
One of the most promising areas for OCT system research is the pursuit of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs) for OCT systems. Such approaches offer to dramatically reduce the size, weight, power, and costs of future OCT systems. Such reductions could enable increase adoption of OCT in existing markets and open up a wide range of new applications and markets for OCT. While there remain several ...

      Integrated-optics-based swept-source optical coherence tomography
We designed, fabricated, and characterized an integrated-optics-based swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) system in TriPleX technology. An external 1300 nm swept source is coupled to the chip, which contains waveguide structures for interferometric depth ranging and balanced detection. The complete OCT chip has a footprint of 0.4 cm 1.8 cm . Light from the chip is focused onto the s.ample using an aspheric lens; the lateral resolution is ...

    7. Toward Spectral-domain Optical Coherence Tomography on a Chip

Toward Spectral-domain Optical Coherence Tomography on a Chip
We present experimental results of a spectraldomain optical coherence tomography system based on an integrated optical spectrometer. A 195-channel arrayedwaveguide- grating (AWG) spectrometer with 0.4-nm channel spacing centered at 1300 nm and a 125-channel AWG with 0.16-nm channel spacing centered at 800 nm have been fabricated in silicon oxynitride waveguide technology. Interferometric distance measurements have been performed by launching light from a broadband source into a free-space Michelson ...

Feature Of The Week 5/29/11: Researchers at University of Twente and University of Amsterdam Investigate Miniaturization of SD-OCT Systems using Integrated Optics
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an interferometric imaging technique which has developed rapidly over the last 20 years and has many applications in biomedical optics. Current OCT systems consist of a large number of bulk optical components and are quite expensive. Thus integration of optical components is expected to make OCT systems smaller and more cost efficient.Within the MEMPHIS project (Merging Electronics and Micro & Nano-Photonics in Integrated Systems), researchers ...

    9. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography imaging with an integrated optics spectrometer

Spectral domain optical coherence tomography imaging with an integrated optics spectrometer
We designed and fabricated an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) in silicon oxynitride as a spectrometer for spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). The AWG has a footprint of only 3.0 cm×2.5 cm, operates at a center wavelength of 1300 nm, and has 78 nm free spectral range. OCT measurements are performed that demonstrate imaging up to a maximum depth of 1 mm with an axial resolution of 19 ...

    10. SiON Integrated Optics Elliptic Couplers for Fizeau-Based Optical Coherence Tomography

SiON Integrated Optics Elliptic Couplers for Fizeau-Based Optical Coherence Tomography
Integrated optics potentially can offer significant cost reductions and new applications to Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). We design, fabricate, and characterize Silicon oxynitride (SiON) elliptic couplers, which can be used to focus light from a chip into the off-chip environment. Fizeau-based OCT measurements are performed with elliptic couplers and a moveable mirror. The optical fields at the output of the elliptic coupler are simulated and measured. Good agreement is observed ...
