    Eric A. Swanson

    Eric Swanson is a director, consultant, advisor and active participant in a variety of entrepreneurial, industrial, academic, government, and non-profit initiatives. Mr. Swanson serves as a director for NinePoint Medical Incorporated, Acacia Communications Incorproated, and Curata Incorporated. Mr. Swanson is a research affiliate in the Research Laboratory of Electronics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is an affiliate of the MIT Deshpande Center for Entrepreneurship, serves on the Governing Board of the Danish National Quantum Innovation Center, does a variety of volunteer activities, and is editor of www.octnews.org.

     

    Mr. Swanson is a co-founder or founding board member of five start-up companies: Advanced Ophthalmic Devices (an ophthalmic OCT company acquired by Zeiss Meditec in 1994), Lightlab Imaging (a cardiovascular OCT company acquired by St. Jude Medical in 2009), Sycamore Networks (Nasdaq IPO 1999), Acacia Communication (Nasdaq IPO 2016), and Curata Incorporated (private). Collectively these companies have shipped well over $1B in products around the world.

     

    Mr. Swanson was involved in Research and Development at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory for 15 years. He served in various technical and managerial roles of an R&D group working on optical networks (including development and demonstration of one of the world’s first WDM All-Optical Networks) and inter-satellite laser communication (including architecture and development of one the world’s first inter-satellite laser communications systems - GEOLite). At MIT Lincoln Laboratory Mr. Swanson also participated in the discovery and advancement of Optical Coherence Tomography.

     

    Mr. Swanson has authored ~200 technical papers and conference presentations, holds ~40 US patents and numerous foreign patents, and co-authored 7 book chapters. He is a Fellow of the OSA and senior member of the IEEE. In 2002 he was a co-recipient of the Rank Prize in Opto-Electronics for pioneering work in the field of Optical Coherence Tomography. In 2012 he was a co-recipient of the $1.3M Champlimuad Award also for pioneering work in the field Optical Coherence Tomography. Mr. Swanson holds a B.S. summa cum laude in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
