About David T. Delpy
David. T. Delpy is Vice-Provost (Research) in the Dept of Medical Physics & Bioengineering at the University College London. He joined the Medical Physics & Bioengineering Department at UCL, to work on the development of catheter tip pressure transducers. For the next five years, I worked on a range of catheter based sensors in a research group headed by Dr. Dawood Parker. In 1976 I was appointed as a Senior Physicist in the Department with a major responsibility for the physiological monitoring equipment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and in 1982 became a Principal Physicist. During this time, the majority of the sensors work that I did revolved around blood gas monitoring in the newborn and premature infant in collaboration with the research group in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UCL headed by Professor Osmund Reynolds (now headed by Prof John Wyatt). This research led inevitably towards the monitoring of oxygen supply and utilisation in tissues and especially the brain. In collaboration with research groups in the Departments of Paediatrics and Physiology at UCL, we applied the techniques of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to the monitoring of brain function in newborn infants. In 1986, following the departure of Dawood Parker to take up a Chair in Medical Physics at the University of Swansea, I became a Senior Lecturer at UCL, and in 1991, Hamamatsu Professor of Medical Photonics.
