      USC joins national group in search for signs of onset dementia | Usc News

      Keck School of Medicine of USC researchers have joined a nationwide consortium that aims to identify and validate biological markers that predict the onset of dementia. The five-year investigation, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute on Aging , was launched in 2016 with more than $6 million in year-one funding. Seven separate projects at institutions that include USC and the University of California, San Francisco, have spent the first two years analyzing and optimizing vascular cognitive impairment and dementia biomarkers, which are measureable biological factors that reliably predict health outcomes. Puliafito received the 2012 António Champalimaud Vision Award today for the invention and development of optical coherence tomography (OCT) — imaging technology that has revolutionized the practice of ophthalmology by dramatically improving the ability of clinicians to diagnose and treat such blinding diseases as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
