  3. Reaching this milestone as quickly as we have is a clear demonstration of the strong demand for our diverse PCI guidance technology....Despite the challenging healthcare and economic environment in the U.S., Volcano has placed more systems in the past 12 months than at anytime in our history, and by our estimate, capturing more than 70% of all new IVUS systems placed in U.S. hospitals during this period.

  4. In addition to experiencing a very solid financial performance during the quarter, we completed our transition from our distributor relationship with Goodman to a direct sales effort in Japan and had new data demonstrating the value of our offerings presented at the recent Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) meeting.

  7. Volcano had an excellent quarter with strong growth in our core intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and functional measurement (FM) businesses and key geographies. IVUS disposable revenues in the quarter were $31.8 million, a record quarter for this business, and a 26 percent increase over the second quarter a year ago. FM revenues in the quarter were a record $7.2 million, with FM disposable revenues increasing 75 percent over the second quarter a year ago. In addition, we continued our successful IVUS/FM console placement initiatives, placing 233 consoles versus 178 a year ago, an increase of 31 percent.
In Volcano Reports 30 Percent Increase in Second Quarter Revenues
  8. We are delighted to be completing this transition nearly a year ahead of our original timetable...Japan is the largest IVUS market in the world. Given recent clinical data, Japan also represents a great market opportunity for our FM offerings, as well as the products in our pipeline, such as image-guided therapy, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Forward-Looking IVUS and Impact micro-catheters. By going direct, we hope to replicate in Japan the market share gains we have achieved in our other key geographies, such as the United States and Europe.

  9. We know from our many years of experience in the IVUS imaging business that simplicity, reliability and cost-effectiveness are just as important to the medical field as imaging performance and resolution. To date, development of the OCT market has been hampered because the lasers used were expensive, cumbersome and not as robust. With our new Axsun laser powering the leading OCT systems, Volcano is enabling a true breakthrough in the industry - a breakthrough that is the result of a 10 year development effort and an investment of over $150 million dollars. We're proud to be a driver of this field and again the technology leader in this important new area of medical imaging. Lightlab's decision to incorporate an Axsun laser into its systems further supports the potential of this technology.

  10. To our knowledge, Volcano's Axsun laser is by far the smallest and simplest high performance external cavity laser available in the world. This miniaturization is expected to provide huge benefits to the medical community in terms of system reliability, form-factor flexibility and ruggedness. In fact, our quality engineers are testing to Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rates measured in decades, not days or years. Despite its ultra small size, this new class of lasers is able to provide extraordinary levels of speed and performance, which should result in superior image quality and allow for very rapid image acquisition times and streamlined procedural workflows.
