About Nicolaus Copernicus University
Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) founded in Torun in 1945 is one of the biggest academic institutions in Poland with the total number of 14 divisions, 54 faculties and 40.000 students. The Medical Physics Group is part of the Institute of Physics of the Nicolaus Copernicus University. Department of Biophysics and Medical Physics at the Nicolaus Copernicus University. The department members use both experimental (optics and optical spectroscopy) and theoretical (quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics) methods to investigate the structure and dynamic of biologically relevant molecules and tissues. Nicolaus Copernicus University Collegium Medicum is the Medical College of NCU.

High-speed optical coherence tomography: basics and applications
Explore Article opticsinfobase.org (Mar 11 2010)
In the past decade we have observed a rapid development of ultrahigh-speed optical coherence tomography (OCT) instruments, which currently enable performing cross-sectional in vivo imaging of biological samples with speeds of more than 100,000 A-scans/s. This progress in OCT technology has been achieved by the development of Fourier-domain detection techniques. Introduction of high-speed imaging capabilities lifts the primary limitation of early OCT technology by giving access to in vivo three-dimensional ...

Optical distortion correction in Optical Coherence Tomography for quantitative ocular anterior segment by three-dimensional imaging
Explore Article opticsinfobase.org (Jan 26 2010)
A method for three-dimensional 3-D optical distortion (refraction) correction on anterior segment Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images has been developed. The method consists of 3-D ray tracing through the different surfaces, following denoising, segmentation of the surfaces, Delaunay representation of the surfaces, and application of fan distortion correction. The correction has been applied theoretically to realistic computer eye models, and experimentally to OCT images of: an artificial eye with a ...

Scanning protocols dedicated to smart velocity ranging in Spectral OCT
Explore Article opticsinfobase.org (Dec 11 2009)
We introduce a new type of scanning protocols, called segmented protocols, which enable extracting multi-range flow velocity information from a single Spectral OCT data set. The protocols are evaluated using a well defined flow in a glass capillary. As an example of in vivo studies, we demonstrate two- and three-dimensional imaging of the retinal vascular system in the eyes of healthy volunteers. The flow velocity detection is performed using a ...

Depth-resolved microscopy of cortical hemodynamics with optical coherence tomography
Explore Article opticsinfobase.org (Oct 6 2009)
We describe depth-resolved microscopy of cortical hemodynamics with high-speed spectral/Fourier domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). Stimulus-evoked changes in blood vessel diameter, flow, and total hemoglobin were measured in the rat somatosensory cortex. The results show OCT measurements of hemodynamic changes during functional activation and represent an important step toward understanding functional hyperemia at the microscopic level.
