Applicability of Optical Coherence Tomography at 1.55 μm to the Examination of Oil Paintings With 47 samples of commercially available oil paints, the applicability of Optical coherence tomography to noninvasive tomography of paint layers was examined. Two different instruments, utilizing near-infrared light with central wavelength of 823nm and, for the first time, 1.55 μm, were used to obtain cross-sectional images. Example tomograms are given; a ray tracing correction of images is also discussed. The tests revealed that applicability of OCT is limited to certain ... (Read Full Article)

Epoxy resin composites reinforced with hollow glass microspheres, microlight microspheres, 3D parabeam glass, and E-Glass individually were subjected to accelerated thermal degradation conditions. X-ray micro computed tomography (XμCT) was used to evaluate density changes, reinforcement filler damage, homogeneity, cracks and microcracks in the bulk of the different epoxy resin composites. XμCT 3D images, 2D reconstructed images and voids calculations revealed microspheres damage, filler distributions and showed cracks in all composites ... (Read Full Article)

Abstract: We demonstrate that polarisation-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) is suitable for mapping the stress distribution within materials in a contact-free and non-destructive way. In contrast to transmission photoelasticity measurements, the samples do not have to be transparent but can be of scattering nature. Denoising and analysis of fringe patterns in single PS-OCT retardation images are demonstrated to be the bases for a quantitative whole-field evaluation of the internal stress ... Abstract Optical coherence tomography (OCT), originally developed and so far nearly exclusively used for biomedical applications (e.g., [1,2]), is a contact-free, non-destructive technique based on low-coherence interferometry to image structures within translucent and turbid materials. Commonly, cross-sectional reflectivity images with a depth-resolution determined by the coherence length of the near-infrared light source are obtained. When OCT is performed in a polarization sensitive way (PS-OCT), additional information about birefringence within a ... (Read Full Article)

Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography: a Novel and Fast Tool for NDT Spectral-domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) is a new, promising variant of OCT, providing superior sensitivity and measurement speed for cross-sectional imaging of turbid materials. OCT, originally developed for applications in the field of biomedical diagnostics, has shown high potential for other non-biomedical investigation tasks, e.g. within the field of non-destructive testing (NDT) and contactless material characterization. However, mostly standard OCT techniques have been used for these applications. Therefore, we demonstrate ... (Read Full Article)

In this paper, we report on optical coherence tomography (OCT) for the investigation of glass–fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) materials. OCT, a contactless and non-destructive imaging technique, provides depth-resolved information on internal structures within semi-transparent materials. In our study, we apply a highly advanced OCT technique: we use a transversal scanning, ultra-high resolution, polarisation-sensitive (UHR-PS)-OCT for the analysis of various GFRP samples. UHR-imaging with resolution in the micron range is shown ... (Read Full Article)

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and its extension, polarization-sensitive (PS-)OCT, are techniques for contactless and non-destructive imaging of internal structures. In this work, we apply PS-OCT for material characterization. We use a transversal scanning, ultra-high resolution (UHR-)PS-OCT setup providing cross-sectional as well as in-plane information about the internal microstructure, the birefringence and the orientation of the optical axis within the material. We perform structural analysis and strain-mapping for different samples: we ... (Read Full Article)
