On The Upswing: Optical Coherence Tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a rapidly emerging, non-invasive, imaging modality enabling in vivo cross-sectional tomographic visualization of internal microstructure in biological systems at resolution levels of a few micrometers. Novel techniques and developments have recently revolutionized its imaging performance and clinical feasibility, turning OCT into a kind of optical analogue to computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, not enabling full body imaging, but non-invasive optical biopsy. The global market for OCT systems is currently around $ 200 million and growing at an annual rate of 34%. A special topical issue of the Journal of Biophotonics will provide an overview of ...

    11. Healthcare Reform: Will Device Makers End Up in the Red or in the Pink?

Tracking the fate of U.S. healthcare reform is like watching a patient being wheeled into the operating room while the surgeons bicker in the corridor over the best way to save his life. Despite the current level of uncertainty surrounding the mid-summer debate, medical device makers should emerge from the legislative operation in relatively good health, according to several industry executives and at least one analyst. Given the focus on cost containment, obvious concerns have surfaced over the ultimate impact on device sales, company profits, product development, and investor confidence. But a quick roundup of industry opinions reveals both ...
