      A handheld microscope integrating photoacoustic microscopy and optical coherence tomography

      The combination of optical resolution photoacoustic microscopy (ORPAM) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) is capable of providing complementary imaging contrasts. Unfortunately, the miniaturization of ORPAM remains a major challenge in the development of a handheld dual-modality imaging microscope with OCT. Here, we report the design and evaluation of an integrated ORPAM and OCT imaging probe using a two-dimensional MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical-system)-based optical scanner.       In vivo oral imaging with integrated portable photoacoustic microscopy and optical coherence tomography

      Oral diseases, especially oral cancers, are becoming serious health problems in humans. To image vasculatures and structures simultaneously in the human oral cavity which are tightly associated with various oral diseases, we develop a dual-modality portable optical resolution photoacoustic microscopy (ORPAM) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) system. This system utilizes a new rotary scanning mechanism and a compact design of the imaging head, making it portable and free of translation of the imaging interface or samples.       Miniature probe integrating optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy, optical coherence tomography, and ultrasound imaging: proof-of-concept

      In this Letter, we present a novel tri-modal miniature side-view probe, through which optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and pulse-echo ultrasound (US) images can be coaxially acquired and displayed simultaneously. The probe consists of a common optical path for OR-PAM (light delivery) and OCT (light delivery/detection), and a 40-MHz unfocused ultrasound transducer for OR-PAM (photoacoustic detection) and US (ultrasound transmission/receiving) with an overall diameter of 2 mm.       Photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) is sensitive to optical absorption, while optical coherence tomography (OCT) is based on optical backscattering. Combining PAM and OCT can provide complementary information about biological tissue. Here we present a combined optical-resolution PAM (ORPAM) and OCT system that is integrated through a miniature probe with an overall diameter of 2.3 mm, suitable for insertion through a standard endoscopic or laparoscopic port during minimally invasive surgery or endoscopic exam.
