Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): The Future of Diagnostics
In the 1990s new optical imaging technology (OCT) was developed which has been utilized in Ophthalmology applications. The first commercial instrument was introduced for this purpose by Carl Zeiss Meditec AG. It is reported that subsequent advances in near infrared light allowed OTC imaging to be used in strongly scattering tissues. As reported in Icp Science (http://icpscience.icp.ort/0034-4885/66/2/204), OCT’s optical biopsy quality allowed the technique to be used to “assess tissue and cell function and morphology in situ”. It is non-invasive and enables precise tomographic analysis of biological structures.
