      Purpose. : To validate a model-driven method (RefMoB) of automatically describing the four outer retinal hyperreflective bands revealed by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT), for comparison with histology of normal macula; to report thickness and position of bands, particularly band 2 (ellipsoid zone [EZ], commonly called IS/OS). Methods. : Foveal and superior perifoveal scans of seven SDOCT volumes of five individuals aged 28 to 69 years with healthy maculas were used (seven eyes for validation, five eyes for measurement).       We read with interest the recently published article by Reibaldi and associates, “Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography of the Choroid in Idiopathic Macular Hole: A Cross-sectional Prospective Study.” The authors state that the study followed a cross-sectional, prospective design. Cross-sectional studies involve sampling from a reference population at a single point in time, evaluating the exposure and the disease simultaneously.       Aim To examine associations between retinal thickness and rod-mediated dark adaptation in older adults with non-exudative age-related maculopathy (ARM) or normal macular health. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 74 adults ≥50 years old from the comprehensive ophthalmology and retina services of an academic eye centre. ARM presence and disease severity in the enrolment eye was defined by the masked grading of stereofundus photos using the Clinical Age-Related Maculopathy grading system.
