      Dual-axis optical coherence tomography for deep tissue imaging

      We have developed dual-axis optical coherence tomography (DA-OCT) which enables deep tissue imaging by using a novel off-axis illumination/detection configuration. DA-OCT offers a 100-fold speed increase compared with its predecessor, multispectral multiple-scattering low coherence interferometry (ms2/LCI), by using a new beam scanning mechanism based on a microelectro-mechanical system (MEMS) mirror. The data acquisition scheme was altered to take advantage of this scanning speed, producing tomographic images at a rate of 4 frames (B-scans) per second.       In Vivo Demonstration of Homonymous Hemimacular Loss of Retinal Ganglion Cells Due to a Thalamic Lesion Using Optical Coherence Tomography

      A previously healthy 40-year-old woman presented with subacute onset of a left homonymous hemianopia. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a T2-hyperintense lesion in the right thalamus, with associated subtle gadolinium enhancement ( Figure 1 ), and a small periventricular lesion. Although her visual symptoms were improving, a new left-sided hemiparesis developed 3 weeks later. Additional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed extension of the original thalamic lesion into the right internal capsule, with persistent contrast enhancement. Her visual and motor symptoms gradually improved over 3 months.

      Comparison of Time Domain and Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography in Measurement of Macular Thickness in Macular Edema Secondary to Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinal Vein Occlusion

      Purpose. To evaluate macular thickness, agreement, and intraclass repeatability in three optical coherence tomography (OCT) devices: the time domain (TD) Stratus OCT and two spectral domain (SD) OCTs, Spectralis and Cirrus SD-OCT, in eyes with macular edema secondary to diabetic retinopathy (DR) and retinal vein occlusion (VO). Methods. In a prospective observational study at a university-based retina practice, retinal thickness tomography was performed simultaneously for fifty-eight patients (91 eyes) with DR and VO employing a time domain and two spectral domain OCTs.       Sclerochoroidal Calcifications Imaged Using Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography

      Purpose: To report a case of sclerochoroidal calcifications and describe the appearance of these lesions using optical coherence tomography with enhanced depth imaging (EDI-OCT) technology. Design: Case Report Methods: An 85-year-old patient who presented with bilateral retinal lesions suspected to be metastases was evaluated with slit-lamp biomicroscopy, funduscopy, fluorescein angiography, B-scan ultrasonography (U/S), and EDI-OCT. Results: B-scan U/S demonstrated echo-dense consolidations in the choroid bilaterally with acoustic shadowing consistent with sclerochoroidal calcifications. EDI-OCT revealed hyper-reflective lesions with decreased reflectivity posterior to the lesion.       Retinal optical coherence tomography manifestations of intraocular lymphoma

      Purpose Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare disease. The index report describes a patient with intraocular lymphoma secondary to recurrent PCNSL and corresponding retinal findings on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Methods Case report. Results OCT changes were documented and correlated with the clinical course of intraocular lymphoma progression in the index patient. The OCT changes, manifested as hyperreflective material accumulation in the intraretinal and subretinal pigment epithelial spaces, were caused by lymphomatous infiltration. Conclusion SD-OCT can be useful in diagnosing and monitoring the progression or regression of intraocular lymphoma with retinal involvement.

      Abstract Purpose  Punctate inner choroidopathy (PIC) is an ocular inflammatory disease. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) allows detailed visualization of retinal and choroidal structures. We aimed to describe the retinal changes on SD-OCT associated with PIC lesions localized in the macula. Methods  Retrospective case series: PIC lesions not associated with choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and captured by macular SD-OCT scans were identified and characterized.       Progressive changes from idiopathic macular telangiectasia seen with spectral domain optical coherence tomography

      Idiopathic macular telangiectasia causes bilateral gradual vision loss, usually with an onset between 40 and 60 years of age. Diagnosis is made by clinical examination and fluorescein angiography (FA), which demonstrates late frame leakage from incompetent retinal vessels temporal to the fovea. In addition, parafoveal pigmentary changes are visible, particularly temporal to the fovea, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) often demonstrates hyporeflective spaces within the retina.
