      Use of optical coherence tomography for accurate characterization of atherosclerosis
      Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a novel imaging technology based on low-coherence interferometry that uses scattering of near-infrared light as a signal source to provide vascular cross-sectional imaging with definition far superior to any other available modality. With spatial resolution of up to 10μm, OCT provides 20-fold higher resolution than intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), currently the most used modality for intra-coronary imaging. OCT has the capacity to provide invaluable insight into the various phases of atherosclerotic disease and vascular response to therapeutics.       Cardiovascular optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a catheter-based invasive imaging system. Using light rather than ultrasound, OCT produces high-resolution in vivo images of coronary arteries and deployed stents. This comprehensive review will assist practicing interventional cardiologists in understanding the technical aspects of OCT based upon the physics of light and will also highlight the emerging research and clinical applications of OCT.       Background: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) permits a highly accurate NIH assessment at each strut level within a cross-section. The aim of this study is to evaluate heterogeneity of NIH among different stents. Methods: Patients enrolled in ODESSA were assessed. ODESSA was a prospective randomized trial designed to evaluate strut coverage of overlapped (OLP) vs. non-OLP stent segments for the treatment of de-novo, native coronary artery stenosis with four different stent types: Sirolimus-eluting stent (SES); Paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES); Zotarolimus-eluting stent (ZES); and Liberte BMS (BMS).
