      Multi-Scale, Multi-Modal Image Integration for Image-Guided Clinical Interventions in the Head and Neck Anatomy

      The aim of this paper is to enable model guided multi-scale and multi-modal image integration for the head and neck anatomy. The image modality used for this purpose includes multi-pose Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Mega Voltage CT, and hand-held Optical Coherence Tomography. A biomechanical model that incorporates subject-specific young's modulus and shear modulus properties is developed from multi-pose MRI, positioned in the treatment setup using Mega Voltage CT (MVCT), and actuated using multiple kinect surface cameras to mimic patient postures during Optical Coherence Microscopy (OCM) imaging.       Systems and methods for generating a tunable laser beam
      Systems and methods of generating a tunable laser beam are disclosed. An example method includes: generating coherent optical beams from a plurality of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs); combining the coherent optical beams into a combined coherent optical beam; and tuning the combined beam to a selected frequency range to output a coherent optical beam having only the selected frequency range. In some embodiments, the SOAs are arranged in parallel within a resonant cavity, and each coherent optical beam has a different center wavelength that overlaps in bandwidth with another one of the coherent optical beams.

      Optical design of a dynamic focus catheter for high-resolution endoscopic optical coherence tomography
      The optical system design of a dynamic focus endoscopic probe for optical coherence tomography is reported. The dynamic focus capability is based on a liquid lens technology that provides variable focus by changing its curvatures in response to an electric field variation. The effects of a cylindrical exit window present, in practice, for a catheter were accounted for. Degradation in image quality caused by this window was corrected to get diffraction limited imaging performance.       Task-based Optimization and Performance Assessment in Optical Coherence Imaging
      Optimization of an optical coherence imaging (OCI) system on the basis of task performance is a challenging undertaking. We present a mathematical framework based on task performance that uses statistical decision theory for the optimization and assessment of such a system. Specifically, we apply the framework to a relatively simple OCI system combined with a specimen model for a detection task and a resolution task. We consider three theoretical Gaussian sources of coherence lengths of 2, 20, and 40 µm.
