    1. Functional recovery after macula involving retinal detachment and its correlation with preoperative biomarkers in optical coherence tomography

Functional recovery after macula involving retinal detachment and its correlation with preoperative biomarkers in optical coherence tomography

To introduce an ETDRS grid-based classification for macula involving retinal detachment (MIRD) with or without center (foveal) involvement and to identify biomarkers in preoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) associated with a favorable postoperative functional outcome in eyes with center involving retinal detachment (CIRD). One hundred and two eyes of 102 consecutive patients (f/m: 35/67) with primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, preoperative evidence of MIRD (perifoveal involvement of ≤ 6.0 mm), and successful retinal surgery were included in this retrospective cohort study. Eyes were assigned to 5 grades of MIRD (G1-G5), based on the extent of detachment in the ETDRS ...

    2. Corneal optical density in Fuchs endothelial dystrophy determined by anterior segment optical coherence tomography

Corneal optical density in Fuchs endothelial dystrophy determined by anterior segment optical coherence tomography

Purpose: In this study, we propose a method to grade corneal stromal opacity using optical density measurements by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and validate the approach in Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD). Methods: A retrospective analysis of human corneal OCT scans was performed on 48 eyes of 32 patients with FECD and 33 control eyes of 21 patients using the Carl Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT 5000. In addition, corneal edema in fresh rabbit cadaver eyes was artificially induced by distilled water and imaged with the Thorlabs TELESTO-II spectral domain OCT at different time points during saturation. The increase of ...

    3. Effects of Flavanol-Rich Dark Chocolate on Visual Function and Retinal Perfusion Measured With Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography

Effects of Flavanol-Rich Dark Chocolate on Visual Function and Retinal Perfusion Measured With Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography

Importance A recently reported randomized clinical trial suggested beneficial effects of vasodilating flavanols in dark chocolate on visual function without objective quantification of retinal perfusion. Objective To assess the effects of dark chocolate flavanols on subjective visual function and retinal perfusion objectively quantified on optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography. Design, Setting, and Participants This randomized, masked double-blind crossover clinical trial analyzed 22 healthy participants at the Department of Ophthalmology, Ludwig Maximilians-University Munich, Germany, in July 2018. Analysis was intention to treat. Analysis began in July 2018. Interventions Participants were randomized to consume 20 g of dark chocolate containing 400 mg ...
