      Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography with a conical beam scan for the investigation of birefringence and collagen alignment in the human cervix

      By measuring the phase retardance of a cervical extracellular matrix, our in-house polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) was shown to be capable of (1) mapping the distribution of collagen fibers in the non-gravid cervix, (2) accurately determining birefringence, and (3) measuring the distinctive depolarization of the cervical tissue. A conical beam scan strategy was also employed to explore the 3D orientation of the collagen fibers in the cervix by interrogating the samples with an incident light at 45° and successive azimuthal rotations of 0-360°.       Superparamagnetic graphene quantum dot as a dual‐modality contrast agent for confocal fluorescence microscopy and magnetomotive optical coherence tomography

      A magnetic graphene quantum dot (MGQD) nanoparticle, synthesized by hydrothermally reducing and cutting graphene oxide‐iron oxide sheet, was demonstrated to possess the capabilities of simultaneous confocal fluorescence and magnetomotive optical coherence tomography (MMOCT) imaging. This MGQD shows low toxicity, significant tunable blue fluorescence and superparamagnetism, which can thus be used as a dual‐modality contrast agent for confocal fluorescence microscopy (CFM) and MMOCT.       Purposes : To (i) evaluate variations in choroidal thickness (CT) and choroidal volume (CV) in diabetic macular edema (DME), as demonstrated by fluorescein angiography (FA) and enhanced depth-imaging (EDI) optical coherence tomography (OCT) (EDI-OCT) and (ii) correlate these variations with visual acuity.       Optical coherence elastography for human finger-pad skin deformation studies

      An optical coherence tomography (OCT) system with an A-scan rate of 20 kHz was developed for measuring the biomechanical properties of human finger-pad skin. Such an OCT system operates at a center wavelength of 890 nm with a spectral bandwidth of 150 nm resulting in a very good axial resolution of 2.6 μm. The measured sensitivity and sensitivity roll-off of the system were ~93 dB and ~6 dB mm -1 , respectively.       An Optical Coherence Tomography Assessment of Stent Strut Apposition Based on the Presence of Lipid-Rich Plaque in the Carotid Artery

      Purpose: To evaluate the rate of stent malapposition, plaque prolapse, and fibrous cap rupture detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT) after carotid artery stenting (CAS) based on the presence of lipid-rich plaque, which may be associated with acute stent thrombosis. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted involving 26 consecutive patients who underwent CAS with OCT imaging acquired before stent deployment and after stent dilation.       GaAs-Based Superluminescent Light-Emitting Diodes with 290-nm Emission Bandwidth by Using Hybrid Quantum Well/Quantum Dot Structures

      A high-performance superluminescent light-emitting diode (SLD) based upon a hybrid quantum well (QW)/quantum dot (QD) active element is reported and is assessed with regard to the resolution obtainable in an optical coherence tomography system. We report on the appearance of strong emission from higher order optical transition from the QW in a hybrid QW/QD structure. This additional emission broadening method contributes significantly to obtaining a 3-dB linewidth of 290 nm centered at 1200 nm, with 2.4 mW at room temperature.
