    New OCT Image Analysis Capabilities From Wasatch Photonics

    Wasatch Photonics is pleased to announce the expansion of our WP OCT Software and software development kits with new features to facilitate the translation of images into actionable information. These OCT image analysis capabilities lower the barrier to use for OCT by non-experts, and offer the potential for automated analysis of images in real time.

    The new features include image enhancement, layer segmentation, and classification functions based on powerful machine learning algorithms, and may be accessed from our user-friendly OCT image acquisition software or via our software development kits (SDKs). To help you see the possibilities, we have trained our software on a basic library of biological and industrial samples, upon which we can build to develop custom analysis parameters and capabilities for your specific application.

    Image Enhancement: The newest plug-in to our WP OCT software and SDKs draws on the power of machine learning to provide real-time image enhancement to bring out the most important features in your OCT images. Unlike traditional image enhancement methods which average multiple scans to reduce noise, our enhanced images are generated from a single scan, capturing changes in real-time without blurring due to sample movement or vibration.

    Layer Segmentation: Automated OCT image analysis often begins with identification of the surface to air boundary, allowing surface topology to be mapped and providing a reference point for measurement of layer thicknesses below. We’ve done the work for you, automating segmentation of the top layer to subtract noise above the sample or generate binary sample images. Building on this, we can develop custom analysis of the layers in your specific sample type to extract parameters like thickness, uniformity, or consistency.

    Identification/Classification: Applications in quality and nondestructive testing may seek to answer much simpler questions about a sample, such as “What is it?” or “Is the quality acceptable?”. Our machine learning algorithms can be trained to conclusively identify samples from a possible library, determine whether defects are present, or assess quality of the sample based on your own predefined criteria. This eliminates the need to train the operator in image analysis, and provides more rapid, objective feedback for process control or diagnostics.
