    New Device Performs 3D “Optical Biopsies” Of Skin

    DAMAE Medical and NKT Photonics have worked together under the Eurostar financing program to combine the cutting-edge Line-field Confocal Optical Coherence Tomography (LC-OCT) imaging technology, developed by DAMAE Medical, with the innovative supercontinuum laser technology provided by NKT Photonics.


    With a broadband SuperK white light laser as a key component, DAMAE Medical has developed an in vivo skin imaging device which performs “optical biopsies” based on the new LC-OCT technology.

    This unique technique couples the technological advantages of OCT and confocal microscopy: high resolution at high penetration depth. The broadband near-infrared light from the laser combined with high aperture microscope objectives guarantee an isotropic cellular resolution of 1 micron.

    With the combination of 3 imaging modes – vertical, horizontal, and 3D – the handheld imaging probe enables the dermatologist to visualize the epidermis and dermis in real-time; and get a better understanding of skin pathologies at the cellular level thus accelerating their management and facilitating access to non-invasive diagnostics and treatments.

    The LC-OCT device is used together with dermoscopy to provide a more accurate diagnosis. The device reduces the number of biopsies of benign lesions and allows earlier detection of melanoma and more precise diagnosis of non-melanoma skin cancers. Moreover, it can guide surgery with more accurate presurgical margins, avoiding unnecessarily large scars and reducing the risk of recurrence.

    Moreover, 3D imaging capabilities at this level opens the way for leveraging from the potential of the finest image analysis technologies, providing access to robust algorithms for segmentation and quantification of skin microstructures, thus facilitating the dermatologist LC-OCT-based therapeutic decisions.

    Throughout Europe, a CE-marked clinical device is used in clinical trials to validate the accuracy of LC-OCT diagnostics in onco-dermatology before the launch onto the market by the end of 2020.
