Feature Of The Week 2/13/09. Common-path optical coherence tomography systems have a variety of advantages over traditional interferometer implementations in certain applications. These include compactness, stability, tolerance to group velocity dispersion, and polarization missmatch since the sample arm and reference arm, to a high degree, share the same path. A recent paper by Khay Ming Tan et al from the University of St. Andrews demonstrates this in a Fourier-Domain OCT system where they integrate the reference reflection and a fiber micro-lens and discuss applications such as needle biopsy and endoscopy.
