PHD POSITION – OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY ON AGRO-FOOD PRODUCTS
The MeBioS group performs groundbreaking research on innovative sensor technologies and the associated data analysis methods to understand and control the quality of products and ongoing processes. The research on sensors mainly focusses on optical sensor systems (spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, thermography, smart cameras,…). While the data research involves the optimal design of experiments, chemometrics, process monitoring and control, as well as artificial intelligence and deep learning. OCT/OCM is a challenging new technique for non-destructive 3D imaging of biological tissues, without the need for sample preparation!
Monitoring living tissues and organisms for an extended period of time, while not harming them or affecting their environment, is often required when studying agro-food products. Moreover, a good visualization of food microstructure is essential when evaluating physical quality features, which have a large impact on consumer quality perception. Standard microscopy typically requires an extensive sample preparation, while 3D spatial information is often not obtained. In addition, following the same sample over time (4D) is not feasible.
To overcome these limitations, the Biophotonics group is developing anon-invasive full-field optical coherence microscope (FF-OCM) for longitudinal, non-invasive, label-free three-dimensional imaging. Using high-magnification optics,FF-OCM can achieve sub-cellular resolution, while its image contrast is caused solely by differences of light scattering intensity in the material under investigation. The goal of this project will be to evaluate the potential of FF-OCM measurements for applications in the agro-food sector.
To perform this research, the MeBioS Biophotonics group is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate. Do you hold a master in (bioscience)engineering, materials science or physics? Do you have a creative, critical, analytical and innovative mindset? Do you have excellent oral and written communication skills in English? Then you may be the perfect candidate to join our team. Experience with modelling techniques or optical measurement techniques is a plus.
