Feature Of The Week 2/8/09. OCT has had a dramatic impact on ophthalmology over the past 20 years. Evolving from a scientific concept to a main stream imaging and diagnostic tool used world wide. Next generation Fourier domain systems are now commercialized and offering major advances such as 3D data sets and functional imaging in acquisition times and resolutions that yesterday's 2D system could not achieve. Improved imaging is synergistic with new surgical techniques. For example, laser vision correction has become one of the fastest-growing disciplines in medicine. A fairly new corneal transplant procedure called deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty (DLEK) has the potential to change the lives of millions suffering from diseases and injuries of the cornea. In DLEK procedures a small portion of the inside of the cornea (the endothelium layer) is removed using a femtosecond laser and replaced with new tissue through a small incision in the sclera. In a recent paper by Dr. Isabelle Brunette et al from the University of Montreal shows the utilization of OCT to assess the microstructural proprerties of DLEK grafts.
