We have two exciting opportunities in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering for people with a passion for research at the medicine/engineering interface, looking to use their skills in biophotonics to make an impact in healthcare. Two full time research positions in biophotonics are available within the group of Professor Stephen Matcher in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. The posts are fixed term for 36 months. Successful applicants will have a PhD in biomedical engineering or a closely related area.
The biophotonics group at Sheffield has a strong international reputation in the field of biophotonics and especially optical coherence tomography (OCT). The biophotonics labs are equipped with a range of state-of-the-art facilities. The post-holders will be expected to have extensive prior experience in biophotonics techniques, especially OCT and/or infrared spectroscopy. They will work on a new EPSRC-funded Healthcare Impact Partnerships project to develop and apply cutting-edge OCT techniques to dermatology, especially the assessment and monitoring of atopic dermatitis (eczema). Techniques to be developed include ultra-high resolution visible light OCT, high-speed OCT angiography and mid-infrared OCT. Extensive collaborations with clinical colleagues at Mt Sinai hospital, New York and industrial collaborators from major pharmaceuticals companies will be a key feature of these posts.
