Feature Of The Week 1/31/09: Polarization-Sensitive Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging of Demineralization on Tooth Surfaces
Optical Coherence Tomography News (Jan 31 2009) Dentistry
-
Feature Of The Week 1/31/09: The promise of low-cost, high-resolution, non-ionizing imaging for dentistry continues to spur research and commercial activity. Daniel Fried, a professor from UCSF, has done a lot of interesting work on OCT applications in dentistry. One recent publication shows PS-OCT imaging of demineralization of tooth roots. This figure contains three images: Top/A Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), Center/B microradiography (TMR); and bottom/C PS-OCT. The PS-OCT B-scan image is of the orthogonal polarization state, taken across a block of human dentin after exposure of the block to a solution designed to cause subsurface demineralization of the dentin. The left side was treated with topical fluoride (F), the center was protected with acid resistant varnish (S), and the right side was unprotected (D) before exposure to the demineral izing solution. The black arrows indicate where the analyses were performed. PLM (A) shows the lesion depth on both sides (F and D) of the sound protected area (S). Note the shrinkage in the TMR and PS-OCT images. To enable the PLM and TRM images the block was cut into 200 µm thick sections subsequent to OCT scanning. For more information see article. Submit your image using feedback link below.
