    New research in fingerprint biometrics uses optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology to acquire fingerprints from where they originate below the surface of the skin. The penetrative nature of this technology means that rich information is available regarding the structure of the skin. This access, in turn, enables new techniques in detecting spoofing attacks, and therefore also introduces mitigation steps against current presentation attack methods.
