    Job Title: Research Assistant/Associate in Biophotonics and Endoscopic Imaging

    Department/Division/Faculty: The Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery in association with Department of Computing, Faculty of Engineering Department of Surgery and Cancer, Faculty of Medicine

    Research Assistant salary: £31,740 to £33,370 per annum

    Research Associate salary: £36,070 to £43,350 per annum

    South Kensington Campus

    Fixed term appointment until 31 st May 2019

    Applicants are invited to apply for a new vacancy at either Research Assistant (pre-doctoral) or Research Associate (post-doctoral) level for biophotonics and endoscopic imaging. The Hamlyn Centre is dedicated to developing safe, effective and accessible imaging, sensing and robotics technologies that can reshape the future of healthcare. Focusing on technological innovation but with a strong emphasis on clinical translation and direct patient benefit with a global impact, the centre is at the forefront of research in imaging, sensing and robotics for addressing global health challenges associated with demographic, environment, social and economic changes.

    The vacancy is created by a major EPSRC grant to the Centre for developing robot-guided endobronchial OCT and fluorescence imaging to allow multi-modal visualisation of the morphological and cellular details of the distal airways. The project is being carried out by a multidisciplinary team with complementary research skills in robotics, optical imaging, and endobronchial intervention.

    We are looking for outstanding applicants in any of the following areas of research:

    • Biophotonics, particularly with strong hands on experience and theoretical skills in confocal endomicroscopy, OCT, and fluorescence microscopy
    • Endoscopic imaging, 3D navigation and multi-scale integration
    • Optical sensing and micro-electronics

    Experience in system integration and practical clinical/in vivo deployment would be an advantage.

    For a Research Assistant level position you must have a Masters degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline. For a Research Associate position you must have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in related disciplines. You will need to have considerable experience in interdisciplinary research and managing large integrated development projects.

    Applicants with strong experience and a proven track record in one or more of the above research areas are encouraged to apply. A high level of analytical and computing skills is required. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research record and publications in relevant areas. Applicants must be fluent in English. The position is based at the South Kensington campus.
