    Morphological characteristics of the atheromatous plaque have been associated with the development of plaque rupture and the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Plaques with a specific morphological phenotype that are at high risk of causing ACS are called vulnerable plaques, and can be identified in vivo through the use of intracoronary imaging.
