Wastach Photonics Launches Handheld OCT and Fundus Imager for Veterinary Ophthalmology Applications

Wasatch Photonics, along with its distribution partner Ocuscience, is launching iVivo VET, a handheld OCT and fundus imager for veterinary applications. This device combines the capabilities of high resolution ophthalmoscope with the detailed imaging of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for large animals. iVivo VET quickly captures extraordinary eye images by overlaying the OCT scans on real-time retina images. The result is unprecedented accurate tissue data collection that provides greater insight into the eye.

The iVivo system gives customers powerful imaging capabilities:

    • “Angle to Angle” cornea images
    • High resolution fundus camera, retina OCT, and anterior segment OCT
    • 50° wide view fundus image
    • 10 megapixel visible spectrum & infra-red imaging combined with OCT
    • Imaging up to 7 micron resolution in tissue
    • Up to 40,000 scans per second
    • 3D imaging and robust analysis tools

The device will be offered in two configurations. iVivo VET C, designed for clinical diagnostics for the companion animal, and iVivo VET R, designed for research in large animal species, in addition providing open source code and data for scientific analysis. The system provides easy alignment and fast capture of retinal images in an awake animal. In addition, iVivo VET allows wide field imaging of anterior segment.

Dr. Gillian McLellan, professor and veterinary ophthalmologist, at the University of Wisconsin says, “The ability to acquire high quality fundus images AND acquire OCT images concurrently will represent an invaluable tool for veterinary ophthalmologists. By enabling accurate documentation of ocular lesions it will facilitate good patient care and will help immensely in client and student education. Ease of use is critical in both a clinical setting and in ophthalmic research, affordable OCT will enhance understanding of pathology that underlies ophthalmic abnormalities in veterinary species. With this information we will be better equipped to fight blindness in our patients.”

Dr. Nishant Mohan, Director of Product Management and Marketing, says “Technological and commercial advances in field of OCT has allowed us to offer a practical imaging solution for veterinary applications. The main challenge was to develop an instrument robust for veterinary environment, yet keeping costs low enough to serve a more frugal market. We feel iVivo VET will serve as an all in one solution for imaging needs of veterinary ophthalmologist. In Occuscience we have a perfect partner in taking our product to the veterinary market."

Daniel Lindgren, President of OcuScience, says of this new product, “iVivo VET provides in-vivo histological data capture for veterinarians. It is an easy to use, complete solution for multi-species ophthalmic imaging. The combined cutting edge technologies developed by the engineers at Wasatch Photonics for delivering the high precision OCT with a high resolution ophthalmoscope includes robust and revealing software algorithms for extraordinary visualization of eye structures.”
