Controversial Data Show RFA Beneficial for LGD in Barrett's, but Accurate Diagnosis Is Key

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in Barrett’s esophagus (BE) patients with low-grade dysplasia (LGD) provides significant protection against progression to high-grade dysplasia (HGD) or esophageal adenocarcinoma, according to the findings of a multicenter, randomized trial presented at the 2013 Digestive Disease Week (DDW) meeting. In fact, the benefit of RFA relative to surveillance alone was so great, that the trial’s safety monitoring committee recommended terminating the trial after an interim analysis.
