    Evaluation of culprit lesions by optical coherence tomography in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction

    Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution imaging modality using a light source with a near-infrared spectrum that allows the characterization of atherosclerotic plaques in vivo . OCT is not able to image coronary arteries in the presence of blood, due to scattering and attenuation of light by red blood cells. While this problem is easily overcome by displacing blood with contrast or Dextran, the presence of erythrocyte-rich thrombus still remains an obstacle for the visualization of underlying plaque.
