Waveform Digitizer and GPU combine to provide 230 kHz A-scan signal acquisition and FFT calculation for Swept Source OCT (SS-OCT)

AlazarTech, a manufacturer of high performance, low cost PC Based Instruments, today announced the release of ATS-GPU®, a software framework that allows the use of Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) for real-time signal processing of data acquired by AlazarTech waveform digitizers.

Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography (SS-OCT) requires acquisition of analog signals at high sample rates and with a rapidly occurring trigger.  This data must subsequently go through a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) before it can be used to create an image. Historically, a computer’s host CPU has been used to calculate FFTs and is becoming a bottleneck for faster systems.

ATS-GPU® allows users to acquire data and do real-time floating point FFT with zero-padding, windowing and log scaling at rates up to 230 KHz for 2048 point FFT and 110 KHz for 4096 point FFT even under notoriously slow operating environments such as LabVIEW.  These benchmarks were done on a fairly average speed computer and a low cost GPU - a faster computer and GPU can do even faster FFTs.

“We noticed that signal processing was becoming the major bottleneck for SS-OCT imaging”, stated Muneeb Khalid, President of AlazarTech.  “We identified GPUs as a low cost and ubiquitous signal processing resource and went about creating a framework that allows our customers to easily use it in combination with our PCI Express waveform digitizers”.

Dr. Marinko Sarunic of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada had this to say about ATS-GPU®: “The specifications are really impressive. It sounds like you have solved in large part the data throughput bottleneck of copying data to the GPU. I was interested to read that AlazarTech will make the source code available for the high speed data transfer, I think that the OCT community will be very excited about that”.

OEMs can integrate ATS-GPU® into their applications using the example programs provided in C/C++, LabVIEW and MATLAB.

    About AlazarTech

AlazarTech, headquartered in a suburb of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, provides high performance, low cost PC Based Instruments and software for customers involved in building OEM products, manufacturing test systems and research and development.  AlazarTech was founded in 2003 by Muneeb Khalid, who was the original founder of Gage Applied Sciences Inc., a pioneer in PC Based Instrumentation.  That company was sold to Tektronix Inc. in 2000.  While AlazarTech manufactures some of the fastest PCI and PCI Express digitizers on the market, speed alone is not the differentiating factor.  AlazarTech concentrates on providing usability features for its PCI and PCI Express digitizers that make them very easy to integrate into real-world OEM applications such as ultrasonic testing, medical imaging and radar signal analysis.  The key differentiation between AlazarTech products and the rest of the industry is AlazarTech’s Dual-Port Memory technology, which enables OEMs to create systems that can capture, analyze and store data in real time.  Customers can use AlazarTech products not only for R&D, but also deploy them in the field.  Competitive products use single-port memory, forcing customers to stop acquisition in order to read data, thereby limiting their usefulness to R&D and algorithm development. AlazarTech also works with selected OEMs to customize its products based on customer requirements. The company's line of ATS PCI and PCI Express digitizers have been recognized by leading European, Asian and North American OEMs as being superior in quality to other devices on the market. The company's products have found applications in industries such as medical imaging, metal inspection, defense, automotive and semiconductor test. AlazarTech sells its products directly in North America, and internationally through a distribution network.  For more information on AlazarTech, visit www.alazartech.com.
