The Advanced Development Team at Optovue is primarily responsible for identifying, evaluating, and developing cutting-edge technologies in the field of ophthalmic and optical imaging.     TheStaff scientist role in the Advanced Development Team provides an opportunity to work with a highly cross-functional group of scientists and engineers to contribute towards next generation products in the field of ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic devices. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and actively work with our team of scientists and engineers for projects involving development of next generation ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic devices. The nature of projects may range from new product development, technology development, concept engineering, and improving existing product features. Strong grasp on the fundamentals of at least one of ophthalmic imaging or biometry systems design, hands-on experience in prototyping complete optical imaging or biometry systems at early stage of product development, team-player with effective communication skills, open-mindedness to new ideas and solution-oriented approach are some of the key attributes that are expected from the person.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Providing technical leadership in ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic devices concept development in the early stage of new product development process and work closely with a highly cross-functional team to bring the concept to a product.
    • Performing the feasibility study of new technologies to mitigate the technical risk before moving into new product development.  
    • Performing in-depth trade-off study of technology solution options, development of systems requirement and architecture for new products/platforms.
    • Prototyping integrated optical imaging systems involving integration of light sources, optics, motion control, image processing and related sub-systems and technologies.
    • Use of first-order mathematical modeling and simulations to assess feasibility, compare technologies and validate experimental results.
    • Clear communication with vendors to define technical performance requirements and appropriate tolerances.
    • Effective communication of investigational findings across departments, including engineering, algorithms, clinical, marketing as well as management through technical presentations and documentation.
    • Keeping up to date with the latest research and developments in the field by reviewing scientific literatures and attending technical conferences.


    • PhD in optics, biomedical instrumentation, electrical engineering, physics, bioengineering or related field plus 2-5 years of relevant working experiences; or MS in optics, biomedical instrumentation, electrical engineering, physics, bioengineering or related field plus 4-7 years of relevant working experience.
    • Demonstrated strong hands-on experiences in developing and prototyping optical imaging and or interferometry systems that requires synchronized data collection and instrument control.
    • Strong mathematical modeling skills to simulate experimental results using Matlab, or C++ etc.
    • Strong grasp of optics, imaging, interferometry and system design fundamentals.
    • Strong problem-solving skill with creative and systems thinking.
    • A self-motivated team player who is adaptable and comfortable working in a dynamic, high-paced environment.

    Desired Skills and Experience:

    • Experiences in building optical imaging systems including but not limited to OCT, scanning laser ophthalmoscope, fundus camera, optical biometry, corneal topography, microscopy, adaptive optics, is highly desired.
    • Experiences of developing a highly regulated medical device through various stages of product development process from concept to manufacturing.
    • Experience in collaborating with doctors and clinical researchers.
    • Good documentation practices.
