    Evolution of optical coherence tomography: from the laboratory to the operating room

    The history of ophthalmology as a medical specialty began with a collaboration between a physicist and an ophthalmologist when Hermann von Helmholtz invented the ophthalmoscope in 1851 and Albrecht von Graefe used it to revolutionize ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment.
